The 11 Things That You Absolutely
Need For A New Puppy or Dog
This is a great checklist to get started with your new pet.  It doesn't encompass
everything but it will be a great start to a happy and healthy relationship!

1. A veterinarian.  Be sure to have your puppy completely checked out by a vet.
Millions of dogs are euthanized every year due to overpopulation, so you should
consider spaying or neutering.  Early vaccinations are critical to your pup's health.
Rabies vaccinations are complete after your pup is several months old. After your
puppy is vaccinated, be sure to get him his county tag confirming rabies vaccination.

2. Identification. Your puppy needs a tag on his collar with at least your phone number
on it in case he wanders off.  Consider micro-chipping your new pup, which is relatively
inexpensive. The micro-chip is placed between the shoulders, is painless, and contains
all the information you provide.

3. Training.  Training is essential to bonding with your pup and to having a
well-behaved pooch. Purchasing a good training book or video is also a good
investment.

4. A dog crate.  Crate training is not cruel and is critical to successful housebreaking.
The crate should be large enough for your pup to stand up and turn around in as (s)he
grows.  Talk to your trainer about crating. Petco has a wide array of crates for you to
choose from.

5. Shallow (tip & spill resistant) food/water bowls.

6. A 6 foot leash is needed for puppy training as well as a properly fitted buckle or snap
collar with proper identification and vaccination information.

7. Food.  Get the best that you can afford – it’s
your puppy after all!

8. Toys!  Stuffed animals, Kong toy, and assorted vinyl and squeaky toys will occupy
your pet and save your expensive shoes from damage!

9. Exercise.  Puppies need lots of exercise.  The more the better, you will most likely be
tuckered out before your pup.  The good news is that exercise is good for you too!

10. Puppy Classes.  Socialization is one of the most important things you can do for
your puppy.

11. Cleaning Supplies.  Sometimes your puppy may make a mistake.  Don't get mad - it
happens!  Be prepared with cleaning supplies.  We have found that Oxyclean products
do a great job with pet mistakes.
